A rare diamond tie-necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels was the star lot of the recent Sotheby’s jewellery auction in New York, netting $3.6 million.
The necklace, circa 1929, composed of graduated links set with variously cut diamonds with elongated tassels that partially rotate tripled its high estimate of $1.2 million, after a six-minute battle between seven bidders.
It provided the framework to showcase geometric-shaped diamonds characteristic of the Art Deco movement, and it’s likely only a few examples were ever made.
