GJEPC, Mumbai Customs Chief meet to address Jewellery Export Concerns


Members of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) met with Smt. Prachi Saroop, Chief Commissioner of Customs, Mumbai, and Shri Manish Tiwari, Commissioner of Customs, Mumbai. The primary focus of this meeting was to deliberate on critical issues concerning the industry. Among the GJEPC representatives present were Shri Kirit Bhansali, Vice Chairman, GJEPC; Shri Ajesh Mehta, Convener of the Diamond Panel; and Shri Sabyasachi Ray, Executive Director.


The discussions primarily revolved around crucial facets of the gem and jewellery trade such as the appointment of expert valuers, the facilitation of e-commerce jewellery exports through courier mode, the consideration of allowing hand-carriage of gems and jewellery, the potential for customs duty exemption on historical imports of sawn diamonds, the introduction of a modern Risk Management System (RMS), and addressing matters related to the RoDTEP scheme.


The meeting concluded with a positive note as Chief Commissioner Prachi Saroop and Commissioner Manish Tiwari acknowledged the concerns of the GJEPC representatives. They informed that concrete steps have been taken regarding the e-commerce export of jewellery via courier mode, paving the way for courier companies to initiate the dispatch of their parcels.


The Chief Commissioner assured her complete cooperation in addressing the other outlined issues to facilitate seamless trade and ensure the integration of modern technology for customs officers.
