Indian diamond mfg. companies, FedEx deal to boost Indian exports

Indian diamond manufacturers are piloting a partnership with FedEx for direct and affordable doorstep deliveries. A customer from anywhere in the world can order diamonds and jewellery from manufacturers in Surat and have it delivered at their doorstep, with all the guarantees in place via e-commerce and transportation company FedEx Corporation.

The GJEPC says the move, designed to cut out the middleman and boost exports, will allow its members to send an $800 parcel for as little as $24.The initiative is initially open to the GJEPC's 2,200 members in Gujurat state. The plan is to roll it out to the rest of the country.

“GJEPC is only a facilitator of the entire operation. The operation will be run in such a way that a piece of jewellery or loose diamond that is placed on the e-commerce site by a trader from Surat or any other Gujarat city can be bought by someone, say a New York resident, by entering into a business deal with the seller. The seller should be a GJEPC member and he/she should first get registered with the FedEx portal to avail the service,” GJEPC Gujarat Assistant Director Rajant Wani told Indian Express.
