Rand Refinery CFO advocates for localisation in South Africa's jewellery industry
Rand Refinery's CFO, Dean Subramanian, has called for stronger localisation laws in South Africa's jewellery industry to protect the economic development of small, medium-sized, and microenterprises (SMMEs). Speaking at a ceremony for graduates of the Silver and Gold Mentorship Programme and Intsika, Subramanian noted that the jewellery manufacturing industry has identified jewellery manufacturing as a critical skill, with 80% of commercial jewellery in South Africa being imported. The Silver and Gold Mentorship Programme is an enterprise development partnership between Rand Refinery, Ekurhuleni Jewellery Project (EJP), jewellery retailer NQ Jewellers, and industry body South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator. The program aims to increase employment and local beneficiation capacity in the downstream jewellery manufacturing and design industry. Additionally, Rand Refinery is committing to upgrade the EJP technical and commercial campus, introduce design criteria and technical processes, and provide a market access avenue with the launch of the Jewellery Village store at Monte Casino, Johannesburg.
