Jewellery park will revive ailing sector, say Coimbatore goldsmith

Goldsmiths in the city welcomed the State government’s decision to set up a gold jewellery industrial park here. The park will give a boost to the sector, which has been facing a decline from the last decade due to competition from big corporates, they said.

Minister for rural industries P Benjamin had recently made the announcement in the State assembly regarding the park, to be set up in Perur in Thondamuthur constituency. It was a long-standing demand, said managing director of Coimbatore Gold Jewellery Cluster S M Kamalhasan. “There were 50,000 micro jewellery units in the city and two lakh people depended on the sector. In the last few years, several people had to abandon the profession and find other jobs mainly due to competition from big corporate jewellers,” he said.

The park will bring together all micro goldsmith units in the city and provide more stability and security for them. It will help develop the sector and also attract the next generation,” he said. The proposed Coimbatore Gold Jewellery Cluster on Vysial Street, undertaken by goldsmiths, will have the latest machinery and infrastructure for jewellery making. It is in the process of getting final approvals. “Once the industrial park is established, we will shift our cluster to the campus,” Kamalhasan said. Courtesy - Times of India
