Mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery will be implemented from April 1, 2023, in India. All gold jewellery must have a six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code, which provides important information about the jeweller who hallmarked it, their registration number, the purity of the article, the type of article, and details of the hallmarking centre that tested and hallmarked the article. Jewellers found selling gold ornaments without the 6-digit HUID code may face imprisonment or a penalty of up to five times the amount of jewellery sold.
The government's move is aimed at ensuring the quality and authenticity of gold jewellery being sold in the market, and to prevent fraud and malpractice. Customers can still sell their jewellery even if it doesn't have a hallmark ID.
